Urban Vault Interviews - Parichay

Urban Vault caught up with Canadian Urban Hindi, Punjabi and English speaking singer, songwriter & producer Parichay to ask him some questions about his music, collaborations & inspirations...

With over 10 years of contributing to the Urban Bollywood music scene as one of the major producers of Desi Urban music in Canada, Parichay has created a sound that is unique to today’s generation, combining a touch of Hindi Classical and Pop music with mainstream Hip Hop, RnB, Reggae, House and Dancehall.

What is your name?

PARICHAY

Where are you from?

Toronto, Canada

How long have you been making music?

Since 1995

How many songs /albums have you released to date?

2 albums so far; No Boundaries (2009), All New Everything (2011)

Can you tell us about your new album 'All New Everything' and the background and inspirations behind it?

With 'All New Everything', I wanted to make music that came straight from within and experiment with sounds as much as I can. I like new things in general and wanted the album to sound fresh and new to my own ears from what is currently out there. Keeping it versatile and covering a wide range of lyrical topics and musical genres was a priority and I'm very happy with the way the record has turned out.

How have you ended up in the music industry?

It happened naturally. Since I participated in Zee TV's Antakshari back in 1995, one thing led to the next.

What do you think of the music industry in 2012?

This is the best time for music in general. The East is reaching out to the West and vice versa, which is taking collaborations to another level. I am enjoying every moment of my time making music in this time that we are in.

Who inspires you when you make your music?

Absolutely anything could inspire me. For example; the sound of a certain instrument, a friend's relationship story, a certain catchy word, absolutely anything!

Who have you collaborated with so far in your Career?

RDB, Joe Louis, Freedom, Teesha Nigam, Quinn Maybach, Richious, RIZ to name a few. These artists are all superstars in their own respectable genres of music.

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

Kanye West, AR Rahman, Sonu Nigam, Busta Rhymes to name a few.

What was the first album u bought?

The first album I ever bought was Shafqat Ali's "Awara Sur" back in the early 90's. Not many people would've heard of it but the music in this record was a good 20 years ahead of its time.

What’s your favorite song at the moment?

Pitbull's "Hey Baby" featuring T-Pain

If you had to sell your music collection tomorrow, what album would you leave in your draw?

Kanye West - Graduation

What do you think of TV music talent show competitions?

They are a great platform for new talent and there are some super-talented people on these shows, most of whom are doing really well for themselves after finding their own spot in the industry.

What do you do when you’re not making music?

Fly remote controlled airplanes, travel, play soccer, swim, hang out with friends and a bunch of other things.

What’s your favorite Fashion brand?

Right now I'm liking Marc Jacobs, ZARA and Hugo Boss.

Do you have any tattoos or piercings?

Have my ear pierced but not tattoos yet, although I am thinking of getting one on my left arm.

How many pairs of trainers do you own?

Countless - I have an addiction for kicks and sunglasses.

How many hats do you own?

Only about 5 different ones for those lazy times when I can't be bothered to gel my hair :)

What’s your favorite takeaway?

If food is what you're talking about, I'd say Nandos.

How many followers do you have on twitter?

I was never a Twitter person but am getting into it slowly. My twitter family should be around the 2000 mark but that number should grow substantially since I'm active on it now.
